State Relay Meet – Pool Captain’s Report (18/07/2010)
A comparatively warm and sunny winter’s day greeted the 32 North Sydney Masters swimmers and hundreds of other swimmers from around the state for the annual NSW State Relay Meet on July 18. While many of our club members were battling the seasonal ailments and other injuries, we all rallied together with great esprit de corps to place third overall. This is a great result considering the top two teams had substantially more swimmers competing than we did!

2010 Short Course Nationals - Meet Report
By Helen White
The 2010 Nationals were held in Launceston, Tasmania from April 7-10. Only Louise Stevenson , Daniel Betrami , John de Vries and Helen White were prepared to risk an encounter with a two headed person or Tasmanian Devil. Just as well because the new Launceston indoor swimming complex was great. The only complaint was the one year old, 8 lane 50 m pool was cut in half with a boom as the competition was Short Course. Warm down facilities were plentiful at the other end of the pool. Change rooms were not over generous in size but the showers were hot and free. Woo Hoo! A bonus was the pool café with comfy couches to slump in and outdoor seating overlooking the Tamar Valley. The coffee and food was really good too.
As far as swimming went, John was not so happy with some of his backstroke turns (what’s new?) ...but won silver in 25,50,100, 200 Backstroke and bronze in 200 IM. Helen managed a top ten place in all 8 swims. Her best being 4th in the 200 Breaststroke and 5th in 100 Breaststroke. Not that she really wants to be a Breaststroker. Daniel demonstrated lessons in sprinting taking out 5 gold medals by participating in 3 25’s, 3 50’s and 1 100m race. On the opposite end of the scale, Louise participated in only one 100m race and five 200’s and two 400’s. She felt long ocean swimming especially the Rottnest swim hadn’t been the greatest preparation for a pool competition but she swam well. She ran into some competition in the freestyle events, but won all of the form stroke 200’s and medley’s. The 400 IM in particular looked great.
Well done to the small but successful contingent on your results. For those looking for a swimming vacation in 2011, mark your calendars for April 26-May 1 in Perth for 2011 Nationals. console.clubsonline.com.au/document/documents/Draft%20program%202011.pdf

State Short Course Meet Report – March 2010 – Woy Woy
Submitted by Gillian O'Mara
Now it could’ve just been me, but the general ‘vibe’ at the State Short Course Championships in Woy Woy this year was that the flesh was willing but the spirit was weak. Still recovering from the mental and physical preparation for the World Masters Games last October, a number of Masters swimmers have opted out of competition for a while. Those still competing are maintaining good physical condition but the aggressive racing mindset seems to be stuck in ‘lacklustre’ mode.
That said, there were still some strong performances at the meet and a stack of new club records were established by Alan Godfrey, Fabio Petro, Helen White, Hiroto Homma and Veronica Torelli. Special mention must go to Robyn Sargent who not only plays a mean game of lawn bowls, but set new club records in every event in which she competed: How’s that for consistency?! Alan Godfrey, Gill O’Mara and Melissa Beams chalked up poll positions for their age groups. Keep your eyes on Melissa Beams’ 50m freestyle – she’s making a habit of breaking the 30 second barrier and it will only be a matter of time before she chips away to a sub 29. Likewise John De Vries continues to maintain a scorching pace for the 100m backstroke.
But as a reminder that Masters Swimming is as much about fun as it is about PBs, the moment of the meet surely must be attributed to John Kain, who perfectly executed a completely illegal backstroke to breaststroke turn in the 200 IM. Nice work, Sandbag.

NNS SENSATIONAL SPRINT MEET
North Sydney Pool: 14 November 2009
North Sydney Masters held our annual sprint carnival at the best address on earth in November last year, instead of our usual February time slot. The aim was to make use of the warm weather as the last few carnivals had been on the chilly side. It was a beautiful night and we were very lucky, keeping our fingers crossed for this year. We had 195 swimmers – which although lower than previous years, was a great turn-out given the World Masters had only just finished.
A great job was done by all the officials, many of whom came from the club. Thanks especially to Roz, Matthew, John W, Robyn, Belinda, Christina, Regina, Karen, Mary, Anne and all those club members who helped through the evening to make it a successful meet. As a note though, we do need more qualified officials, and hopefully many of our swimmers will start on their way to doing some officiating – otherwise we will not be able to run the meet at all.
There were many great swims during the evening, One world record was set at the carnival, by Jenny Whiteley (Ryde Masters) in the 50 breast. Jenny and Clary Munns (Blacktown City Masters) each set a national record in the 50 free, while our own North Sydney swimmers set two national records in the men’s 400 free relay (120+ and 200+ age groups). Blacktown City set a national record in the mixed 400 free 240+ relay.
We look forward to another successful meet and fun and camaraderie on Saturday 20th November 2010!!
Alan Godfrey
NNS Meet Director.
(Pool captain's note: Apologies for the lateness of this report, as outgoing pool captain, I'm just cleaning up loose ends. Stay tuned for March 2010 State Champs report and April 2010 SC Nationals report).
