2010 Short Course Nationals - Meet Report
By Helen White
The 2010 Nationals were held in Launceston, Tasmania from April 7-10. Only Louise Stevenson , Daniel Betrami , John de Vries and Helen White were prepared to risk an encounter with a two headed person or Tasmanian Devil. Just as well because the new Launceston indoor swimming complex was great. The only complaint was the one year old, 8 lane 50 m pool was cut in half with a boom as the competition was Short Course. Warm down facilities were plentiful at the other end of the pool. Change rooms were not over generous in size but the showers were hot and free. Woo Hoo! A bonus was the pool café with comfy couches to slump in and outdoor seating overlooking the Tamar Valley. The coffee and food was really good too.
As far as swimming went, John was not so happy with some of his backstroke turns (what’s new?) ...but won silver in 25,50,100, 200 Backstroke and bronze in 200 IM. Helen managed a top ten place in all 8 swims. Her best being 4th in the 200 Breaststroke and 5th in 100 Breaststroke. Not that she really wants to be a Breaststroker. Daniel demonstrated lessons in sprinting taking out 5 gold medals by participating in 3 25’s, 3 50’s and 1 100m race. On the opposite end of the scale, Louise participated in only one 100m race and five 200’s and two 400’s. She felt long ocean swimming especially the Rottnest swim hadn’t been the greatest preparation for a pool competition but she swam well. She ran into some competition in the freestyle events, but won all of the form stroke 200’s and medley’s. The 400 IM in particular looked great.
Well done to the small but successful contingent on your results. For those looking for a swimming vacation in 2011, mark your calendars for April 26-May 1 in Perth for 2011 Nationals. console.clubsonline.com.au/document/documents/Draft%20program%202011.pdf
